Modernisation of Heating Systems
Recently in Poland there has been an intensification of anti-smog measures, with particular emphasis on household emissions caused by the use of low-grade fuel and inefficient heating systems.
It can be seen from the statements of people surveyed that modernisation of household heating systems is progressing fairly briskly, although coal-fired boilers and stoves are still the most common. Over the last three years (March 2018 – March 2021) there has been a drop of nine percentage points, from 59% to 50%, of respondents whose houses or flats are heated by coal. During the same period there has been a distinct rise in the number of people heating their homes with gas, oil or electricity, from 19% to 25%. There has also been a slight rise in those taking advantage of district heating, whether municipal or local (e.g. on a particular housing estate), from 20% to 22%. The 3% of people who declare other forms of heating utilise wood and wood pellets or, less frequently, heat pumps.

This ‘Current Events and Problems’ survey (370) was conducted using a mixed-mode procedure on a representative sample of named adult residents of Poland, randomly selected from the National Identity Number (PESEL) register.
Respondents independently selected one of the following methods:
– Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI);
– Computer Assisted Telephone Interview (CATI), respondents receiving researchers’ telephone numbers in an introductory letter from CBOS;
– Computer Assisted Web Interview (CAWI), where respondents filled in the online questionnaire independently, gaining access by means of a login and password provided in an introductory letter from CBOS.

– Computer Assisted Web Interview (CAWI), where respondents filled in the online questionnaire independently, gaining access by means of a login and password provided in an introductory letter from CBOS.
In all three cases the questionnaire had the same structure and comprised the same questions. The survey was carried out between 1 – 11 March 2021 inclusive on a sample of 1154 people (44.5% using the CAPI method, 41.2% CATI and 14.3% CAWI).
CBOS has been conducting statutory research using the above procedure since May 2020, stating in each case the percentage of personal, telephone and internet interviews.
