Drop in Satisfaction with the Functioning of Democracy in Poland

The years 2018–2020 were among those most highly rated in terms of how democracy in Poland was functioning, with the percentage of people happy about the state of Polish democracy surpassing the percentage of its critics. Between July 2020 and April of this year these ratings have clearly deteriorated: the proportion of those who are satisfied with the functioning of democracy has plummeted by 11 percentage points (from 49% to 38%), while the proportion of those who are not happy has jumped by 8 points (from 44% to 52%). The current assessments of democracy in Poland are similar to those of 2016–2017.

More on this subject in the CBOS report.
This ‘Current Events and Problems’ survey (371) was conducted using a mixed-mode procedure on a representative sample of named adult residents of Poland, randomly selected from the National Identity Number (PESEL) register.
Respondents independently selected one of the following methods:
– Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI);
– Computer Assisted Telephone Interview (CATI), respondents receiving researchers’ telephone numbers in an introductory letter from CBOS;
– Computer Assisted Web Interview (CAWI), where respondents filled in the online questionnaire independently, gaining access by means of a login and password provided in an introductory letter from CBOS.
In all three cases the questionnaire had the same structure and comprised the same questions. The survey was carried out between 8 – 18 April 2021 inclusive on a sample of 1131 people (47.3% using the CAPI method, 38.5% CATI and 14.2% CAWI).
CBOS has been conducting statutory research using the above procedure since May 2020, stating in each case the percentage of personal, telephone and internet interviews.
