Where do we get our music?
The vast majority of adults (86%) listen to music at least a few times a week. The largest percentage of these (68%) usually listen to what is broadcast on the radio, followed by those (39%) who most often choose the music on TV, while close to a third (30%) go for free online music. Only 8% of the people who listen to music make use of paid internet services. The remainder indicate CDs or DVDs as their main source of music (14%), audio files saved to devices such as smartphones or computers (11%) and vinyl records (2%).
The choice of source of music is most strongly connected with age. Respondents who are 45 and over listen to music over the radio more frequently than average, while those over 54 are also more likely to choose TV broadcasts. Younger people, particularly the very youngest, are very clearly more likely to choose online sources for their music, both free services (most popular among the 18-24 age group) and paid ones; also a significant number of them have audio files saved to their smartphones or other devices.
