Polish Participation in Nuclear Sharing
The subject of inclusion in nuclear sharing has returned to public debate in Poland. Full inclusion would involve the deployment of US nuclear weapons on Polish soil and certification of Polish warplanes for their delivery. The recent CBOS survey shows that opinions on this subject are unusually divided. The percentage of those in favour (44%) is only a few points greater than the percentage of those against (40%), while as many as 16% of those surveyed had no opinion at all.
Polish participation in nuclear sharing has markedly greater backing among men than women, younger respondents, particularly those in the 25-34 age group, city dwellers and those with a higher per capita income. Support for deployment of nuclear weapons in Poland is somewhat higher among respondents with right-wing views, though not at all low among those on the left. It is, however, clearly lower among people without any defined political views. Approval for Polish participation in nuclear sharing is particularly high among Confederation voters, and is also a majority view among the electorates of both Law and Justice and Third Way. Among Civic Coalition voters, on the other hand, opinions are very divided, while in the electorate of the Left there is a clear predominance of voices against.
More on this subject in the CBOS report.
This ‘Current Events and Problems’ survey (415) was conducted using a mixed-mode procedure on a representative sample of named adult residents of Poland, randomly selected from the National Identity Number (PESEL) register. Respondents independently selected one of the following methods: Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI); Computer Assisted Telephone Interview (CATI), respondents receiving researchers’ telephone numbers in an introductory letter from CBOS; Computer Assisted Web Interview (CAWI), where respondents filled in the online questionnaire independently, gaining access by means of a login and password provided in an introductory letter from CBOS. In all three cases the questionnaire had the same structure and comprised the same questions. The survey was carried out between 8 – 21 November 2024 inclusive on a sample of 981 people (57% using the CAPI method, 24.9% CATI and 18.1% CAWI). CBOS has been conducting statutory research using the above procedure since May 2020, stating in each case the percentage of personal, telephone and internet interviews.
