Summer Holidays during the Pandemic

This year the summer school holidays took place during the lasting Covid-19 pandemic, starting after several months of remote learning. Although some of the restrictions on movement had been lifted at this point, it was still very difficult, or actually impossible, to travel to many popular holiday destinations abroad. Within Poland and in other countries various measures to safeguard people’s health were in force.
The year 2020 is one of the worst years in the history of CBOS surveys when it comes to school-age children and young people being able to go away for at least a week during the summer holidays. During the period 1993–2020 there have been only four years when the majority of families have not ensured this kind of holiday for their children (1993, 2004, 2005 and the current year, 2020). In comparison with last year, there has been a fall of 22 percentage points (from 68% to 46%) in the proportion of households sending school-age children away for at least a week’s holiday. This drop has come after a very good five years, when a majority of households with school-age children reported that all the children had gone away for at least a week.
