Paid Extra-Curricular Activities
Every year many parents of school-age children decide to pay for various extra-curricular activities. This school year, as well as a year before, they account for about a half of interviewees having schoolchildren (46%). Decision of sending children for paid after-school activities is influenced primarily by their parents’ level of education.
For several years the most common after-school activities have been foreign language courses (this academic year 28% of parents have decided to pay for it). Comparing to last year declarations similar proportion of parents invested in development of art skills of their children (17%), however, less families decided to sponsor tutorials and preparatory courses (12%).
This year again an increase in number of families sending children for paid sport activities (such as: swimming, football, basketball, tennis, martial arts, school sport clubs, horse riding etc.) has been noted. The exceptionally high interest in sport activities (27%), comparable to that in language courses, may be an effect of recent social campaigns promoting physical activities and fitness among young people. The campaigns stressed that physical activities influence health also later in life and pointed out shortages of what is offered in schools.
