Support for Other NATO Countries’ Soldiers Stationed in Poland
The majority of Poles (57%) think that other NATO countries’ soldiers should be stationed in Poland. Support for such a solution is currently the highest in the history of our surveys. Supporters of constant presence of allied armed forces have never before been more numerous than its opponents.
Although the majority of interviewees support stationing of other NATO countries’ soldiers in Poland, opinions on respecting signed in 1997 “Founding Act on Mutual Relations, Cooperation and Security between NATO and the Russian Federation”, in which NATO resigned from deploying nuclear weapons or regular armed forces on the territory of new member states, are almost equally divided. However, it is worth noting that slightly more Poles think that, in current situation, NATO should not respect the agreement and should treat new NATO members, including Poland, as the older ones, which means that it should not restrict disposing weapons and NATO forces in new member states, than those convinced that NATO should respect that agreement even though Russia does not respect international law (39% and 37%).
More on that issue can be found in the CBOS report in Polish: “After NATO Summit in Newport“.
The data comes from the surveys “Current Problems and Events” conducted in years 1999–2014.
